The Importance of Protecting Your Data

Protect Your Data

More of our lives are digital now than ever before, which means we need to learn how to protect our valuable data from unauthorized users.

What is Data Security?

Data Security is the protective digital privacy measures we use to prevent unauthorized access to computers, databases, and websites.

As an organization, ERSGA prioritizes protecting data by investing in resources such as firewalls, encryption, data masking, and other software, hardware, and protocols. These tools guard against attempted external or internal breaches.

Once in the system, user authentication prevents access to data.

What is User Authentication?

User Authentication is allowing a user access to a system or data through a prescribed methodology.

Authentication asks a user to provide a password, a code, biometric data, and/or some other identifier for user verification before having the ability to access a system or data.

For the most effective authentication practices, follow these guidelines:

  • Protect your password: don’t share it, show it or make it available for others
  • Change your password: change your password often, and don’t make it predictable
  • Lock the computer screen when walking away

One important authentication tool is Multi-Factor Authentication, or MFA. This is important to utilize while logging into ERSGA’s secure pension desktop:

  • It adds an extra layer of security to keep hackers out and your data safe.
  • It’s a simple step that gives you stronger protection and peace of mind.
  • It ensures only you can access your account, even if your password is stolen.

What if I Receive a Fraudulent Email?

You may think fraudulent or spam emails are obvious to identify, and sometimes they can be, but even the most diligent person can miss subtle signs.

If you have any doubt that an email is truly from ERSGA, contact us directly at 404-350-6300 or visit ers.ga.gov to verify the email’s authenticity.

Remember: reporting fraudulent emails helps to protect everyone. If you receive one, don’t ignore it—report it!
